News Update: "Department of War" Authorized as Secondary Title

On September 5, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order designating “Department of War” as a secondary title for the Department of Defense. This historic name, used from 1789 to 1947, may now appear in ceremonial or non-statutory communications, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized for the title “Secretary of War” in applicable contexts—though the legal name remains unchanged until Congress legislates otherwise (White House, The Guardian, Politico).
