The lightning flash indicates the speed and shock effect of air assault operations and the peak refers to the mountainous area of Fort Carson, Colorado where the unit was activated. The sword, the blade, five-segmented hilt and the cross guard with eight primary feathers represents the numerical designation of the unit.
